Growing toward
the sun
We
came through it with flying colors, thanks
to you. Our final hurrah at our 118
E Lafayette St location was HUGE! People
came and showed support with flying colors
on June 27th. Denny Anderson and
his saxophone echoed down the street. It
was a wonderful evening, filled with emotion,
memories, tears, smiles, hugs and great
art! Yes, the Dickson Gallery of
Fine Art may now be closed as a storefront,
but we're still growing and reaching and
touching people with local fine art! As
you can see the website is still here. It's
not going anywhere other than upward and
onward. We're simply working on regrouping,
planning, and working out the details
of how and in what way to approach the online
version of what the Dickson Gallery is all
about...original art for art lover's like
you. Feel free to share your thoughts
as to what you'd like to see here. Obviously
you're looking for something, or you wouldn't
be here now. It's our hopes that we
fill the need of what it is you're
looking for. Don't forget to watch
the gallery blog for all the latest greatest,
and tune in to our online radio shows too.
It's gonna be nothing less than super
cool. Hold on tight! We've
been adding images of hand-written comments
from the walls of the Dickson Gallery the
last few days. See for yourself

Yep,
I'm a muppet fan... and have
always loved the "balcony"
guys, Statler and Waldorf.
In
lue of the recent events here
at the Dickson Gallery I
called and asked their advice
regarding the gallery's landlord and
his lack of action to complete
the necessary repairs to the
building we're in. They sent
me the above photo of their
response.
...I
couldn't agree more.

Dickson Gallery
swings
no more
Yes,
it's true. The Dickson Gallery
of Fine Art closed their storefront location.
You may have noticed on
a drive by that the Dickson Gallery looks
a bit empty. Due to renovation
of the building next door, we closed our
doors on May 21st so that the structural issues to our
building that surfaced could be addressed
in a timely manner. Unfortunately,
this did not occur and there was no end
in site. Soooo, due to loss of
income and the no-end-in-site, imminent-threat
of-construction we were forced to close
the doors of our storefront gallery forever.
However,
we chose to go out with a bang, by
hosting a "final hurrah" of sorts
on Friday, June 27th where we celebrated all that
was, all that is and all that will be. (Besides
we all needed closure due to this horrible
development). Special
thanks to all of you who joined
with us as we celebrated in Dickson Gallery
style.
(check
out our blog
for comments and photos about
that special night.)
We
know you love our art and certainly would
never deprive you of the freedom to select
from our fabulous array of original regional
artwork! Feel free to shop at our
online store. We are planning keep our
website going and will continue to sell our wonderful
array of artwork online indefinitely.

We
also hosted a tribute radio
show where many of you called
in to tell us what you thought.

is now available

you to those who
called in and gave tribute to the Dickson
Gallery. Tribute
show honoring the
Dickson Gallery
of Fine Art (55
minutes)

The Dickson Gallery of Fine Art located
in downtown Jackson, TN has certainly left a legacy. They are forced to
close their doors after three years of representing local artists'
flair. (Closure is due to construction to the adjacent building and its
effect on the gallery's building).
Rachel Dickson will be speaking about all the fun and some not so fun things
that happened throughout the gallery's existence in downtown Jackson.
She'll also be giving tribute to artists, businesses and clients who've been
so very
supportive
of the
Dickson
Gallery's
efforts
over
the
years. |

Speak Radio-June
17, 2008 featuring Resident
Artist for RiverBarge
Excursion Lines Watercolorist
Roy Elmer (45
minutes)

Rachel
Dickson talks with resident artist of RiverBarge Excursion Lines, Roy Elmer:
Over the years Roy’s colorful landscape
and still life paintings have come to the attention of important
critics and gallery owners. Notables such as actors Morgan Freeman,
Kelly McGillis, Nicholas Cage, celebrity chef
Paula Dean, writer Anne Rice and Nascar driver Cale Yarborough own
Roy’s paintings. Roy
was
born
in Union
City,
TN in
1939
and
moved
to Paris,
TN at
the
age
of 8.
He
spent
over
twenty
years
in the
commercial
art
field,
including
seventeen
years
as art
director
for
a large
retail
chain
in New
Orleans,
before
devoting
full
time
to his
painting.
Roy
and
his
wife
now
make
Milan,
TN home
but
they
spend
several
months
of the
year
on the
Mississippi
and
Ohio
rivers
aboard
the
cruise
ship
The
River
Barge
Explorer
where
Roy
is the
resident
artists.
Roy
said,
“It
is important
to me
that
my work
be accessible
to all
kinds
of people.
I was
raised
in a
working
class
environment
and
want
the
kind
of people
that
I grew
up with
to enjoy
my work.
Being
an artist
is a
highly
skilled,
chancy,
anxiety
laden
occupation
where
you
are
always
asking
yourself:
‘Is
what
I am
doing
really
valid?’
Every
time
I sell
a painting
I am
revalidated.
I
am truly
blessed
that
for
forty
years
I have
been
able
to make
a good
living
by doing
what
I enjoy
most.” We're going to speak with Roy while he's aboard
RiverBarge Excursion Lines docked in Cincinnati. He's been their
resident artist for 2 years and has entertained countless guests painting live
on well
over
100
trips.

Speak Radio-May
21, 2008 featuring
corporate guests Monte
Jones and Chuck
Hatfield (45
minutes)

Rachel
Dickson, host of Art Speak, talks with special guests Chuck Hatfield (a
paralegal in the law offices of Divorce, Inc.), and Monte Jones
(President of Commercial Bank and Trust -Jackson, TN) about the
positive aspects of having fine art in the workplace.
Art in its many forms of expression enriches our lives and can be a
catalyst for personal empowerment, enhanced creativity,
community-building and positive social change. Corporate art is more
than
just
personal
preference
or taste.
It
can
create
visually
dynamic
thought-provoking
and
inviting
surroundings
that
enhance
your
image
and
reflect
your
firms
culture
values
and
vision.
Companies
realize
that
art
can
immediately
transform
a workspace;
it can
facilitate
dialogue,
cultivate
appreciation
and
garner
admiration
from
clients,
colleages,
visitors
and
employees.
Let's
talk
about
it. |

story can be found in the content above.
But we want you to know what's new,

Well, we're trying to figure that out too...but
this we know. www.DicksonGallery.com

Gallery artwork. Super cool for you,
because you'll be able to view our original

Ave, Saturday, August 9th. It's
a Wine Tasting Fine Art event benefiting
the hippotherapy program which used to be
under the West TN Cerebral Palsy Association.
It's now under the auspices of West
TN Healthcare. We're gonna pull out all
the stops and bring you one of the finest
fine art events to be found in Jackson,
TN. Stay tuned for more on this...

Below
is a sampling of what
others have been saying...
|
"I was searching for things to do on a business trip to Jackson, TN. Their
website engaged my curiosity, so I checked in out in person. I enjoyed it so
much I have already been back and plan to return in the future. A quick fix of beauty and culture in a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere. You are
in for a real treat if you get to meet the owner, Rachel Dickson. It's worth the
drive from Nashville or anywhere!
"I
had the pleasure of visiting
the Dickson Gallery recently
and was very
pleasantly surprised to find such a wide variety of quality art
work. I was especially impressed with the photography. The owners were very
cordial and polite-no pressure sales tactics. Overall a very pleasant
experience!"
"The (staff
member) behind the rather cool front desk was helpful and seemed to know a
great deal about each of the artist. As a collector of moderately priced art the
story of the artist is as important to me as the work itself. The decor
compliments the work yet is still fun and modern, in a good way, not at all
sterile. If you find yourself in Jackson, TN it's definitely worth a
trip downtown. This smallish town is working hard at both growing and keeping
the hometown feel. America at it's best."

Tennesseans
are doing just that by purchasing
unique and colorful specialty
license plates. It's
a fun way to express your individuality
and support the cultural life
of Tennessee. Purchasing
a license plate provides
funding and support
for arts activities in your
own community through
the grant programs offered by
the Tennessee Arts Commission.
The demand for these specialty
plates has steadily increased,
and now provides over
two thirds of the Commission's
grants budget.
