Statement: Raised
in Nashville and currently a
resident of Jackson, Gay McCarter
has made a significant name
for herself in the art world.
A graduate of the University
of Florida in 1979, she later
received her Master of Science
degree in Counseling Psychology
from Florida State University.
In 1992 she was awarded her
M.F.A. degree in painting from
the Memphis College of Art.
Working
in the media of oil, watercolors,
mosaics, and sculpture, she
is an award- winning artist
with an impressive exhibition
history. She has had solo exhibits
at The Center for the Cultural
Arts in Gadsden, Alabama, Lambuth
University, Jackson State Community
College in Jackson, the Ned
R. McWherter West Tennessee
Cultural Center in Jackson,
the West Tennessee Regional
Art Center in Humboldt, and
her work has been featured at
Elkananh’s Gallery and the Dickson
Gallery in Jackson. She has
also had her work published
on the cover of the sociological
textbook, Social Welfare: A
World View, by Katherine Van
Wormer, as well as being a featured
artist in Sonia King’s new book,
Mosaic Techniques &
Traditions: Projects and Designs
from Around the World. In
2000 Ms. McCarter completed
work on a public outdoor mosaic
mural for the city of Jackson.
It is entitled “Jackson and
the Arts”; measures 21 ft. x
5 ft.; is located next to the
Ned McWherter West Tennessee
Cultural Arts Center; and was
featured in the February 2002
issue Southern Living Magazine’s
“Tennessee Living Section”.
