is a student majoring in Art
Education and Studio Art, concentration
in Clay, and will be certified
to teach in both art and gifted,
K-12. I like just about every
medium I've tried, even though
academically I have been focusing
on clay. I'm attracted to ceramics
for many reasons. I like how
maleable and flexible it is
to work in; I like the freedom
to sculpt it, and yet once it's
fired, the result is permanent.
I like constantly unraveling
more and more of the mystery
of ceramics...that is, how the
chemical processes occur and
how to manipulate them. As a
relatively right-brained individual,
it has been a struggle to master
the chemistry of firing and
glazing. My current work
focuses a lot on texture and
relatively subtle glaze/patina
effects. I'm drawn to the concept
of a vessel, both in my figurative
and functional works, and how
they relate to one another.
The body is a vessel (for the
mind, soul, and future generations);
the ceramic vessel has a connection
to the body (as a container
for food and drink, or in its
resemblance of the human form).
I don't believe in communicating
a clear concept to the viewer,
because sometimes I don't even
realize what my work might mean.
I think that many elements of
a work of art are subconscious
and can hold different, equally
valid meanings for different
people.
