When
I think of horse-drawn carriages
my thoughts usually go immediately
to Sherlock Holmes and the clip-clopping
of horse-hooves over the cobble
stone streets of London. Not
really sure why that’s the first
thoughts I have, but then next
I usually think about the role
of horses and carriages of the
West. I’ve
seen horse-drawn carriages used
in weddings, parades, reenactments
and even at Dolly Parton’s dinner
theatre, Dixie Stampede in Pigeon
Forge, TN. They’re pretty neat
all things considered. But
I only recall riding in a carriage
one time. Not too long
ago either….Actually, August
of this year in downtown Jackson.
In fact, it was with the
same carriage company that Moore
Studio and the Downtown Tavern
hired from Memphis who was downtown
last Thursday, December 15th.
I can’t explain the feeling
that comes over you when you
hear that clip-clopping of a
horse-drawn carriage in downtown
Jackson. Just seeing them
unhurriedly strolling up a downtown
street is pretty nostalgic.
Never
fails…when I see ‘em I always
find myself reflecting on what
it must have been like back
when horses, horse-drawn carriages
and buggies were the only mode
of transportation that you saw.
No radios blaring, no
cell-phones ringing or singing
(whatever the case may be).
Those folks must have
got an awful lot of undistracted
thinking done to and from their
destinations. I’ve
decided that if I had children
I’d want them to experience
a horse-drawn carriage ride
today. If

we
as adults enjoy them so much…I
can only imagine what a child
would think about them. Well,
we’re lucky enough here in Jackson
to now have ample opportunity
to enjoy such a visit to the
past. The next opportunity
is coming up December 30th when
Sugar Creek Carriage company
will be offering rides throughout
downtown Jackson during “Fabulous
Friday” downtown from 7:00p-9:00p. We
may not have cobble stone streets,
but there’s certainly an air
about riding in a horse-drawn
carriage through downtown that
awakens memories of her not-so-forgotten
past. Or maybe it’s just
the way the clip-clopping of
the horses cultivates our imagination.
Whatever the case, it’s fun.
And I hope it never gets
old. Well, obviously it
hasn’t since horse-drawn carriages
have been around for centuries.
If
you’re interested in experiencing
this for yourself, then come
on downtown Friday night December
30th between 7:00p-9:00p. Most
downtown shops will also be
open late for you to peruse
before and after your carriage
ride. So come and experience
a night on the town in Jackson’s
downtown. For

Friday” December 30th call Jackson
