Traditionally
the week prior to the New Year
we all at least briefly consider
modifications in our daily routine
endeavoring to improve various
areas in our life. Some
of us may even consider major
modifications. Somehow
flipping the calendar from December
of one year to January of the
next is like turning over a
new leaf…a fresh start, a clean
slate…of sorts. Naturally
everything we do is cumulative.
There is no such thing
as white out, a delete button
or the ability to “reboot” our
lives. But we can resolve
to do or go about things differently.
When
I think about preparing for
change…I usually find myself
in the self-help section of
a bookstore scanning titles
authored by Stephen Covey, Robert
Kiyosaki, and Tom Peters among
many others. But then
I’m reminded we have a very
significant resource at our
finger tips. Time usually
isn’t on my side, and when I
remember…I jump at the opportunity
to visit www.jmcl.tn.org to
see if my book title of choice
is at the Jackson-Madison County
Library. It
took me a while to figure out
that you can access the library’s
catalog through their website
and you can reserve available
books of your choice online
too. They can even have
your selections waiting for
you at the counter when you
arrive. Talk about a time
saver!! You can also renew
your books online extending
your due date and once again…saving
time. COOL! Generally
speaking, here’s a method
that I’ve found works very
|

well.
I’m a book title browser…since
generally I don’t know exactly
what I’m looking for until I
see it and/or read the review
on the back cover and maybe
scan a few pages. So I’ll
go to www.amazon.com looking
through lists of books and book
reviews by the category and/or
subject I’m interested in. Once
I find a list of books I’d like
to read, I hop over to www.jmcl.tn.org
and click on “online catalog.”
From there I can search
the library’s catalog exactly
as I would if I were in the
library. I can even see
if a book is checked-out or
if it’s currently available
to loan. Then the really cool
part…I can reserve it by the
click of my mouse and then pick
up my selections at the library’s
front desk! Ok…that’s
just too cool. And did
you know they also have music
cds and movies to loan?
Our
local library is a resource
that too many of us forget about.
It’s right here in downtown
Jackson at 433 E. Lafayette
Street. So as you think
about 2006, utilize the resources
of our local library whether
online or by a personal visit.
They’re open Monday through
Thursday from 9:00a-8:00p and
Friday and Saturday from 9:00a-5:00p.
For more information,
check ‘em out on the web at
