I
know that the 25th anniversary
is silver and the 50th anniversary
is gold, but I just recently
discovered that the 1st anniversary
is paper. So how appropriate
that this article be in “the
paper.” November
marks the one year anniversary
of The Dickson Gallery of Fine
Art. It’s hard to comprehend
what all has happened with regard
to the gallery and all of downtown
Jackson in 12 short months. Downtown
Jackson is clearly emerging
as that little oasis away from
the chaotic routine of our daily
lives. I recall when I
moved here from Gatlinburg in
2000 the void I felt when searching
for a half-day escape complete
with art galleries, unique little
shops, and one-of-a-kind café-type
dining experiences. Such
an appealing medley didn’t exist
in this area. No longer
the case, downtown Jackson is
quickly becoming that meander
through little shop by little
shop, inviting welcome, charming
ambiance, delightful one-on-one
customer service experience
that some part of us all long
to return to. Don’t know
about you…but the one-stop-shopping
experience serves its purpose…but
it’s not fun any more. I
know I’m not the only business
owner downtown that’s grateful
to Jackson’s and the surrounding
area’s support of our budding
downtown community. That
being said, let me personally
invite you to participate in
this month’s “Fabulous Friday”
event downtown, November 25th
from 7p-9p. Thirteen businesses
are staying open late and hosting
an “Around town info hunt” open-house
sort of event. Participating
businesses will be passing out
a questionnaire listing one
curious question from each business.
Each question can be answered
on location at that business.
I’ve seen the questions…and
what fun they are! Completed
questionnaires need to be taken
to Marguerite’s where they will
be “scored” and dropped into
a drawing for cash and prizes
